How to upgrade to a 30 minute fire door
Fire Risk Assessment Procedure
Before you start make sure that the integrity of the door is good and if it’s a paneled door, usually 4 panels, that the thickness of the panels is no less than 6mm, if your not sure you can buy intumescent backing paper that you can stick on the room side door panels to bring it up to fire door regulations standard.
- Take your door round to the local door stripier it will take him half an hour to strip the door; it would take you all day and the rest.
Cost £10.00. - Bring the door home and lay it on wooden skids, flat on the floor, in a dry airy location; don’t put it near a radiator or stand it up, it may warp. It should take around three or four days to dry out.
- Once dry wait for a nice sunny day, take your door out side put it on two work mates to give your self a good working height. Get yourself some pine wood filler from your local DIY shop (they sell it in sealant type containers now so you can use a sealant gun, very handy but I think the type you buy with a hardener to mix in, is the best unibond do one). Fill in all your little cracks, mostly around the beading joints in the corners. Yes you can pay yourself if you like but it will drive up the price.
Cost £6.00 - Now go and have your lunch and when you come back the filler will have gone off enough to start sanding. Get out your electric sander or borrow one, sand it with fairly rough sand paper first; then go over it with a lighter grade of sand paper, give it a good dusting; leave it for a day to let the filler go off completely.
- Re-hang the door and put on your first coat of Envirograf HW02 Clear Intumescent water based varnish, wait 90 minuets and then put on the second coat, after another 90 minutes put on the top sealant coat of Envirograf HW05TC, after the top coat dries that’s you finished.
Cost of 1lt of HW02 & 1lt HW05TC around £60.00.
